Introduction

Introduction

Pet ownership has never been more popular, with millions of people welcoming dogs, cats, and other animals into their homes. According to the American Pet Products Association (APPA), 66% of U.S. households — about 86.9 million homes — now have a pet. In the U.S. alone, there are roughly 90 million dogs and 94 million cats being cared for as pets.

This dramatic increase in pet ownership shows there’s a real need for solid, all-in-one pet care solutions.

For many new pet owners, especially first-timers, taking care of a pet can feel pretty overwhelming. There’s so much to figure out, like what to feed them, how to train them, keeping up with vet visits, and managing the costs that come with it all. It can be a lot to handle.

As the UX designer for this project, I worked closely with a talented team to bring the app to life. My collaborators included:

  • A writer who crafted the app’s content, ensuring clear, engaging, and informative guidance for pet owners.

  • An illustrator who brought the app to life with vibrant and engaging illustrations, making the visuals more appealing and fun for users.

  • A developer who translated the design concepts into a functional, seamless app, ensuring that all features worked smoothly and effectively.

Together, we combined our expertise to create an app that truly meets the needs of pet owners.

Note: In this case study, I’ve focused specifically on dogs and cats, but the app is designed to be easily scalable to support other animals as well.

The problem

The problem

New pet owners, especially those with little experience, often seek advice from the internet, social media, forums, and books to help them navigate pet care. While these resources can be helpful, they also pose significant risks.

Many online sources lack credibility, leading to the spread of misinformation that can harm a pet’s health and well-being.

Without consistent, reliable guidance, many pet owners end up stuck in a frustrating cycle of trial and error. This not only wastes time but can also lead to behavioral or health problems for their pets.

Additionally, new pet owners who have busy schedules often struggle to keep up with their pets’ frequent needs — like vet visits, walks, and feeding times. With so much going on, it’s easy to forget or mix things up, which can affect their pet’s health.

Taking on the responsibility of a new pet brings not only joy but also extra costs that budget-conscious owners may find challenging to manage. From vet visits and vaccinations to food, toys, and grooming, the expenses can quickly add up. For those who need to keep a close eye on their spending, it can be overwhelming to track and balance these costs effectively.

To sum it up, dealing with unreliable advice, a busy schedule, and extra costs can make owning a pet more challenging than it needs to be, especially for those just starting out.
